The Borgo Pignano in Volterra, Tuscany

Negronis at the Borgo Pignano

During our Tuscany summer world tour, we drove to the Volterra region and stayed at the Borgo Pignano for a night. I had heard that Volterra was a beautiful town and area of Tuscany and that is worth seeing. Volterra is a hilltop village southwest of Florence. The town itself is cute, but if you have already experienced the beauty of the Val d’Orcia and Pienza then it is not worth an entire trip in and of itself. The hotel, the Borgo Pignano, however was well worth the detour. The hotel is a borgo, which is an Italian word that means new town inside the walls of an old town. The property is big and beautiful filled with lots of little spaces and places to explore. It is a big country estate situated in the middle of the Tuscan countryside  with a fabulous infinity pool that overlooks the farmland below. The grounds of the hotel itself are beautiful and we loved every second swimming and lounging at the pool. However, I would say that the service at the hotel could be improved and that we waited a considerable amount of time to get a drink. Although, the man who ran the more casual pizza restaurant on the property was so kind and this restaurant had fabulous service. It felt like the hotel was slightly understaffed for such a large property with lots of different spaces. Despite those little complaints, we had a wonderful experience and loved the grounds. It was the perfect place to kick back and relax on a hot summer day.

We loved our stay at Borgo Pignano and your photos capture it well. We enjoyed making soap and also touring the grounds which were spectacular, including the bees, organic gardens, animals and flowers.
