San Gimignano

After spending a few days back in Florence we drove from Florence to spend the night with my parents at La Posta Vecchia hotel, which is right outside of Rome. On our way down from Florence, we stopped and explored the little medieval hilltop town of San Gimignano. San Gimignano is a hilltop town about an hour and a half south from Florence. As you drive through the countryside filled with vineyards you can see the towers of  San Gimignano in the distance. The town is known for its white wine made from the Vernaccia grape. Vernaccia di San Gimignano is one of my very favorite white wines. It is just so light and refreshing. If you ever get the chance you must try it! We sipped on some cappuccinos in the town center and then tried some of the Vernaccia wine. We only spent about an hour and half in the little town and that was truly all we needed to get a good sense of the place. San Gimignano is very close to Siena and is probably worth seeing but to be honest I wasn’t necessarily wow-ed by the place. If you spend some time in Siena, then you probably do not need to drive and see San Gimignano as well. Siena is very similar to San Gimignano, but Siena is just bigger and filled with more things to see. However, it is worth stopping in San Gimignano to buy bottles of the Vernaccia wine and try some of the food. Plus there is a great place within the city to see a panoramic view of the outside countryside. Tomorrow, more from inside La Posta Vecchia!
