Because my family spent summers sailing around Italy, we docked in the Amalfi harbor on numerous occasions. I loved getting the chance to go back with Matt and see it afresh as an adult. Amalfi is about an hour car ride outside of Naples and is a great place to stay if you want to explore the Amalfi coast. We stayed at the Grand Hotel Convento Di Amalfi for 3 nights. We spent the first day exploring Amalfi, ate dinner in the little town and drank capuccinos in the town square at night. The second day we explored Ravello and ate dinner in Positano. The town feels like it is part of a movie set, teaming with activity and character. You can really eat at any of the restaurants in the square because they are all just so good. Amalfi is a good middle ground between Positano and Ravello, which are both easily accessible from the town. Ravello is about a 20 minute cab ride away and Positano is about a 30 minute ferry ride away. If I went back to the Amalfi coast, I would definitely stay in Ravello or Positano instead of Amalfi. But you really cannot go wrong with any of them! Ravello and Positano just feel a little more glamorous and beautiful, while Amalfi feels much more like a normal town- which is good in other ways as well. I also do not know that I would recommend staying at the Grand Hotel Convento … it was just too expensive in terms of what it offered. It felt like the hotel knew that Amalfi is a tourist hot spot and a good middle ground for seeing the other towns along the coast and that they based their room rates on demand instead of on their quality or service. Traveling to Ravello, Positano and Capri from Amalfi is very easy. There is a really great ferry that runs from Amalfi almost on the hour to Positano and there are always ferries going out to Capri. Amalfi is beyond gorgeous and a must-see when visiting the Amalfi coast (duh!). I would recommend staying there for 1 or 2 nights.
More information about Ravello and Positano will also be posted soon! Guys- this is only day 2 of our week trip! Like the amount of gorgeous pictures we have to post is almost overwhelming!
